China welcomes lunar new year and the year of the dog

16 February 2018

People across China celebrated the arrival of the year of the dog at midnight on Friday. Millions have taken planes, buses and trains to get home so that they could spend Chinese New Year's Eve with their families. The streets in the centre of the capital were strangely quiet this year because of a ban on the sale and use of fireworks and firecrackers. The ban is part of government efforts to reduce pollution in the smog-plagued city.
