Demonstrators turn out as Argentine Congress opens first hearing on legalizing abortion

11 April 2018

Demonstrators turned out in droves in Buenos Aires yesterday as Argentine lawmakers opened the first hearings in an historic debate on legalizing abortion. Argentines in favour of the initiative donned green kerchiefs and waved signs while those opposed waved red flags and balloons. These first hearings are expected to feature more than a thousand speakers to appear before lawmakers to make their cases. Lawmakers presented the bill to legalize abortion early last month. The bill would allow women in Argentina to interrupt pregnancy during the first 14 weeks.
