Hotel Fire: Huge Fire At Kandawgyi Palace Hotel Kills 2, Injures 1

Huge Fire at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel in Mingalar Taungnyunt Township of Yangon Region killed a guest and injured another. The fire broke out around 3:30am on Thursday and engulfed the main building, Htoo group of Companies officials said at a press conference. The huge fire which started on the 5th floor was extinguished at 6:00am. 

The officials, at the press conference, stressed that fire alarm was activated.

Representative, Htoo Group of Companies, Htay Lwin said “The fire alarm started ringing when the fire broke out – we prioritized safety of our guests. There’s no explosion in the fire outbreak. The hotel is insured – we will take responsibility for the guests’ losses. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

142 local and foreign guests were in the hotel’s 96 rooms when the level-4 fire broke out, destroying over 50 rooms. The hotel’s staff helped the guests to evacuate. Most of the guests have now been moved to some other hotels.

CEO, Kandawgyi Palace Hotel said “We move the majority guests in Chatrium and we have moved some of the guests in Rose garden hotel and Guest hotel as well. I gain the guests option to stay in other hotel and they wish and majority in Chatrium. ...we are waiting for the police and also fire department to give us their opinion and one action in course fire. We have an idea and we didn't want to spaculate.... At 3 o clock in the morning when the event happen we have smallest number of staffs in the building so we have a choice look for the location and fine which we did but we wanted to get the staff safety....”

Kandawgyi Palace Hotel was built in the early 1990s on the banks of Kandawgyi Lake.  Htoo group of companies bought the hotel 12 years ago.
