Italy shuts ports to migrant boat, asks Malta to open its doors

12 June 2018

A humanitarian ship with more than 600 migrants on board remained adrift in international waters on Monday as Italy and Malta remained at loggerheads over which country should disembark them. Italian government officials said that Italy would refuse to let the humanitarian ship dock at its ports. It had asked the Mediterranean island of Malta to open its doors to the vessel. Malta brushed off the request, saying it had nothing to do with the rescue operation. More than 600,000 migrants have reached Italy by boat from Africa in the past five years.
